On December 21st, 1988, WJPZ lost a brother in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Steven Berrell- a 20 year-old SU Student and resident of Fargo, North Dakota- was flying home from a semester abroad when his life was tragically taken.
Steven's brother, Rob, is a 1987 graduate of Syracuse University and a former WJPZ staff member. He, his wife Karen, and the entire Berrell family have established an award in Steven's name- The Steven Berrell Exploration & Leadership Award. Given annually, this award fosters and encourages an exploratory spirit among WJPZ students and provides real-world training and education for WJPZ management. Namely, the award sends the WJPZ General Manager and Program Director to the Radio & Records and Conclave industry conferences. In addition, 'JPZ alum and Chairman of the Conclave, Danno Wolkoff ('86), graciously donates a second trip to the Conclave each year. This trip is considered an At-Large Award, and students or young alumni must apply for the award annually with the Alumni Association.
As part of the experience, Award recipients are asked to document their trips with journal entries about the sessions they attend. Read more about the recipients of the Steven Berrell Exploration & Leadership Award below.
